Eko Innovation Center launches EkoVention, to bring in Silicon Valley investors to fund remarkable Lagos-based startups

From the 22nd to the 24th of June 2022, Eko Innovation Center will be hosting EkoVention, themed Lagos: Funding the Future, to bring together Silicon Valley investors to fund startups with remarkable innovations in agriculture, healthcare, finance, education, and smart city infrastructure.

Spiraling startup growth in Africa

In just the first quarter of 2022, according to Maxime Bayen and Max Cuvellier, African startups have drawn in a massive $1.8 billion in investments, recording a growth of over 2.5x from last year’s first quarter. Startups on the continent continue to showcase an increased attractiveness to investors, with a bulk of these startups recording significant strides in various sectors of interest.

In spite of this development, startups within the continent are still struggling with a number of challenges, one of which is the difficulty in scaling due to the paucity of funds, and opportunities to capture investment. The continent’s startup growth pales in comparison with other continents on the globe. Less than 0.2% of the value of the global tech ecosystems have come into Africa, and the gap with other regions keeps widening.

EkoVention – Lagos: Funding the Future

As part of significant efforts in bridging this gap, the Eko Innovation Center will be hosting an Inaugural Summer Venture Funding event, from the 22nd to the 24th of June 2022, themed Lagos: Funding the Future. The event will bring together Silicon Valley investors to fund startups with remarkable innovations in agriculture, healthcare, finance, education, and smart city infrastructure.

The event is targeting startups domiciled in Lagos, with technology products in agriculture, healthcare, finance, education, and smart city innovations. These startups can be in the pre-seed or seed stages, seeking up to $500,000 in investments, and are encouraged to submit their pitch decks via the EkoVention website. Applications are open until the 18th of April, 2022.

There will be a three-stage review of entries, with the third stage, finalizing the selection of the best innovative products. Selected pitch decks will be presented to investors in Silicon Valley and San Francisco before their arrival in Lagos for the event.

In addition to submitting their pitch decks, selected startups will be offered private and public sessions with investors and mentors, entailing pitch preparation, mentoring, and masterclasses.

It is without a doubt that Africa’s startup ecosystem is still very nascent and young. With just over eight unicorns, the ecosystem carries yet a lot of potential for growth and scale, with the right gaps plugged. Through this event, startups across Lagos will be given the opportunity to connect with keen global investors, and an opportunity for greater visibility for their revolutionary innovations.
