SmartProf raises $110,000 pre-Seed round for expansion

Early in July, Smartprof, a Moroccan edtech company, collected $50,000 for their pre-seed fundraising round. Since then, they’ve raised an additional $110,000 from Plug and Play, UM6P Ventures, and a few angel investors. Institutions like UM6P’s Startgate and l’École Centrale Casablanca support it.

SmartProf was established in 2021 by brothers Hamza and Mustapha Faiz, along with Ali Faouiz. The company’s founders believe that the private tutoring market in North and West Africa is worth billions of dollars, so they set out to create a platform that would serve as a one-stop shop for this industry.

After seeing how unsuccessful Morocco’s private education sector was, we set out to change that with Smartprof. “We launched Smartprof after noticing that the private educational system was failing in Morocco. We were convinced that every student needs some personal assistance in order to overcome the challenges faced at school. The private tutoring market is very fragmented; finding a tutor is a nightmare. Additionally, there’s no visibility on pricing, so there was a real need for a tech product that creates a great tutoring experience, ” remarked Faiz, referring to the lack of price transparency in the tutoring industry.

As public school systems become more competitive, shadow schooling, often known as private tutoring, has grown at an astounding rate. A growing number of families and children are depending on private tutoring to close the achievement gap; therefore, entrepreneurs in the region are aiming to digitize the private tutoring experience.

With this fresh capital, Smartprof plans to engage more developers to improve the quality of the product and expand its presence in Morocco and West Africa.
