Catlog has introduced a new facet that streamlines the process of selling a company’s wares online. The business, which has received funding from the likes of Ventures Platform, DFS Labs, Voltron Capital, and HOAQ, has released a new method for using hashtags to locate products for sale on social media. Users may locate items by searching for both the product name and Catlog’s hashtag on social media platforms.
Catlog’s CEO and co-founder, Silas Adedoyin, said on a teleconference that the company launched the function because “we’ve been trying to find out methods to help our vendors earn more sales.” Using the hashtag #findwithcatlog, Twitter users may now conduct product searches directly inside Catlog. To take advantage of this function, all a vendor needs to do is add their product to Catlog.
If a prospective customer searches for a certain product using the hashtag, they will get several postings related to that item. When a customer is ready to make a purchase, they may do so by clicking the “Buy Now” button next to the item they want to purchase on Catlog. A potential customer would submit their information on the website to place an order, and the website would then notify the vendor through WhatsApp. The deal might be finalized at this point.
Social commerce is dominated by meta applications like Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, but Catlog has opted to launch this new service on Twitter. Since it was so simple to implement, Adedoyin said, Twitter was the first platform on which the functionality was released. The Twitter feed just for this function has over 14,000 tweets and about 2,000 followers. He continued by saying that once this function was fully developed, it would be introduced on Instagram.
Adedoyin noted that the number of daily visitors to Catlog’s shops increased by 70% after the function was introduced. He claims that sales have increased by around 25% since the addition was made. However, he would not provide specific figures.
Adedoyin claims that more enhancements are planned that will make it less difficult to sell items through Catlog. According to Catlog’s CEO, the platform will soon roll out a payment stack that will enable merchants to accept payments from buyers using a digital wallet. There will be a delivery option available before the end of the year’s third quarter. A chat-enabled app designed for business use is also in the works.
It’s not inexpensive to build all these features. Due to the additional features, Nigeria’s severe inflation rate (20.77%), and the fact that the company needs to record its revenues in dollars, Adedoyin said that Catlog had to boost the price it charges merchants by 66%, from 900 to 1,500, just to keep the lights on. Alternatively, a premium bundle is available for $4,500.
Regulatory framework for socially-enabled business
It is exciting to see the social commerce ecosystem develop in Nigeria as it does. A social commerce firm called Bumpa revealed earlier this year that it has connected with Meta to let social merchants on its platform handle their DMs from Meta sites directly on Bumpa, without having to go to any of the Meta platforms themselves.
Catlog and Bumpa provide creative, simple, and effective solutions that will enhance the online shopping experience for Africa’s millions of consumers. A PwC study confirms this finding, finding that satisfied customers are more loyal to the service provider and ready to spend an extra 16 percent on future purchases because of their pleasant experience.
